Background of the Study
Semantic clarity is a cornerstone of effective political communication, especially in presidential speeches where precise language can significantly influence public opinion and policy acceptance. In Nigeria, presidential rhetoric is marked by a blend of formal English interwoven with indigenous expressions, creating a unique semantic landscape that merits detailed examination (Ifeanyi, 2023). This study focuses on assessing the semantic clarity of Nigerian presidential speeches by comparing various administrations. By investigating the use of metaphors, idioms, and culturally specific references, the research aims to determine whether these rhetorical devices enhance or obscure the intended message (Obi, 2024). The comparative approach facilitates an understanding of how differing semantic strategies impact public comprehension and political accountability. Recent discourse analyses reveal that ambiguous language in political rhetoric can lead to misinterpretations and erosion of public trust, emphasizing the need for clear and transparent communication (Eze, 2025). This study seeks to bridge the gap in current research by offering a systematic analysis of semantic clarity and its implications for effective political discourse in Nigeria.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the crucial role of semantic clarity in political discourse, there is limited systematic analysis of its effectiveness in Nigerian presidential speeches. The interplay between formal political language and indigenous expressions often results in ambiguous messages that do not resonate uniformly with all segments of the population (Ifeanyi, 2023). Ambiguity in semantic strategies can hinder public understanding and lead to misinterpretations of policy intentions (Obi, 2024). This lack of clear semantic strategies in presidential rhetoric raises concerns about the transparency and accountability of political communication. Addressing this issue is essential to enhance the clarity of political messages and strengthen public trust in governance (Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate semantic clarity in Nigerian presidential speeches.
To compare the semantic strategies across different administrations.
To assess the impact of semantic clarity on public understanding and political engagement.
Research Questions
How clear are the semantic messages in Nigerian presidential speeches?
What linguistic strategies enhance or hinder semantic clarity?
How does semantic clarity affect public perception of political rhetoric?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the understanding of political communication by assessing the semantic clarity of Nigerian presidential speeches. The findings provide valuable insights into how language is used to convey political messages effectively and transparently. Enhanced semantic clarity can lead to improved public engagement and trust in government, making this research vital for policymakers, linguists, and communication experts (Ifeanyi, 2023; Obi, 2024; Eze, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the semantic clarity in Nigerian presidential speeches. It is limited to textual analysis and does not encompass other forms of political communication.
